Preface ☉ Ante·Limen
Metacogsec is a practical paradigm for understanding and defending against cognitive technologies of coercion and control. It looks to media theory and cybernetics, as well as occulted technological traditions like chaos magick and Wicca, in order to understand how the structures that frame our environment and our experience are constituted and maintained by the modulation of altered states (known in occulted traditions as gnosis, the access point to the intensive.)
As these powers of reality constitution are brought from the world of dark patterns and algorithmic manipulation into the light of consent and mutual participation, they offer a new frontier of agency and resistance for the age of technological acceleration.
- I.The premise
- Classical cogsec defends stable belief from misinformation. Metacogsec moves upstream, to the architectures of frame and ontology that decide what counts as a question before any belief is offered. It asks what technologies exist for engaging these deep structures in order to defend against involuntary submission to them and imagine paths of individual and collective ontological construction.
- II.The research paradigm
- Five literacies the work requires — immanentist philosophy, chaos magick, Wicca, cybernetics, media studies — arranged as a pentagram. Each vertex is a living tradition with usable tools; the edges between them name the working surfaces this project is recruiting contributors for.
- III.The working frames
- The four elements of craft — set, setting, atmosphere, altered states — followed by seven operational plates: the subject as assemblage; the convergence of many traditions on a single nondual ordeal; the architecture of consensual passage; ontogenetic potency, gnosis as write access to layers beneath belief; deconditioning, the discipline of wearing and dropping paradigms; and the capture loop.
- IV.The collective turn
- If the architecture that feels like natural law is held in place by shared predictive attention, loosening it together changes a whole community’s degrees of freedom. The constraints any valid collective protocol must satisfy — consensual, strictly materialist, transparent and repeatable — rule out most traditional initiatory structures, and the open problem of charisma re-entering through the most vivid experiencer remains a field question, not a design one.
- V.Design vectors
- Two. Collective cognitive security as the contemporary threat surface, where reality-producing technologies place loosened, suggestible states on people and groups at scale. And buildable interventions: a watchdog catalog of altered-state induction in existing products (what the older traditions called throwing glamour), plus generative counterparts under informed consent — same neurological lever, opposite direction.

METACOGSEC.com is a working notebook for cognitive security in the age of reality fracture. Cogsec, as ordinarily framed, defends rational belief from misinformation. It imagines a stable subject, a polluted information environment, and a single rationality to be preserved. With the rise of the information age, all of those terms are subject to suspicion. The media technologies of the 21st century have brought to the light of day an occulted insight: subjects, the rational systems they engage and the antagonisms they face are all under constant modulation from a concert of visible and invisible forces. The way we engage and are shaped by them can be a matter of personal agency, the art of exerting volition over attention, affect, identity, and the deep states that modulate them. MetaCogSec says: Modern technology is already a mass ritual system. The central question for the individual and the collective is whether those rituals are conscious, consensual, and world-opening, or remain unconscious, extractive, and predatory.
I.What metacogsec is. ☉
Metacogsec investigates the conditions under which thought takes place. Before anyone holds an opinion, an architecture of frames, narratives, aesthetics, rhythms, and institutions has already settled what can appear as a question, what registers as evidence, and what kind of person is doing the asking; these conditions shape the contours of reality itself, since what we call a self is assembled from the same materials it thinks with. Metacogsec studies how this architecture is built and maintained, attending especially to the intensive states through which it does its reorganising work: trance, gnosis, flow, panic, awe, erotic fusion, collective effervescence, and the varieties of possession and capture that contemporary media now produce at scale. A discourse can decide what counts as a thinkable question before any argument is offered, and it does so in the same motion that a feed entrains a rhythm, an AI companion elicits a confession, or a market induces a mania. The vocabulary of existing cogsec, built around stable subjects defending stable beliefs, registers only a fraction of this terrain.
Invisible Architecture
The structures metacogsec tracks are precisely the ones that have stopped looking like structures. The priced commodity, the unitary individual, the nuclear family form, the boundaries of what is socially possible — these are contingent constructions, but they feel like natural law because the predictive machinery of attention has long since collapsed them into habit. The collapse is what makes them disappear; gnosis is the loosening that lets them come up for inspection again.
The traditions gathered in the library agree, across otherwise incompatible metaphysics, that there is a class of nondual states in which this architecture becomes briefly malleable. In gnosis, the frames that ordinarily hold experience in shape soften enough to be examined, loosened, and rewritten. This makes the nondual state the natural site for two complementary operations. The first is deconditioning, in which inherited systems of belief, identity, and salience lose their grip and can be released. The second, which this notebook calls transduction, is the inverse: granting power, presence, and ontological consequence to a system one has chosen, so that it ceases to be a mere idea and begins to organise a life. (Whether that consequence is read as a conditioning of perception, an anomalous engagement with nonlocal or nonlinear causal structures, or some blurred correspondence between the two is a question the craft is agnostic about – see Plate IV.) Every advertising campaign, conversion experience, and charismatic movement already performs transduction without naming it. Metacogsec asks that it be performed knowingly and intentionally.
The animating question
Consensual transformation, or capture.
The word ordeal, used throughout this notebook, names the whole arc of intensive work: the entry into an altered state, whatever is composed or released inside it, and the return to ordinary life with enough structure intact to live there. The animating question concerns who gets to induce such ordeals, under what conditions, with what consent, and toward what forms of life. The question applies as much to a frame, a discourse, or a movement as it does to a ritual, a feed, or a model, all of those media or social technologies that exploit states of heightened brain plasticity in order to define what is real.
Across scales
Scale-free Assemblages.
Cognition extends well past the individual, into the languages, protocols, scenes, institutions, feeds, and models that decide what becomes thinkable. Groups synchronise inside startups and laboratories as readily as inside churches and covens, a process of individuation that forms operative assemblages out of spells of gnosis (attention, adversity, ecstasy, trauma). Is this process the anonymous creativity of a flat collective, or the obfuscated volition of a hidden or explicit orchestrator? These questions are as valid at the collective scale as they are at the scale of the individual.
